I Have a
Plan Iowa is a career curriculum which the State of Iowa requires for students
in high school. It is designed to help students create and adjust career plans
during high school. It is also designed to give information towards the career
they choose. The information in this article had been collected through a
variety of people expressing their opinions on I Have a Plan Iowa.
Two of the
opinions that are recorded are from Western Dubuque High School. “Overall it is
good for kids to have a plan on what they want to do and gives information on
the career,” said Mrs. Lisa Berger. “The teachers involved in special needs use
it on IEP’s.” Mrs. Lisa Berger is part of the special needs department at the
high school. Mr. Rufus Bennett said, “I think it is a good idea to have a plan
on what you want to do for a career.”
These
three opinions are based on the students of Western Dubuque High School think
of I Have a Plan Iowa. “I Have a Plan Iowa is not expanding us on anything that
we should know about the career we choose and what benefits from them.” said
Brandon Davidshofer, a junior. A sophomore, Kaitlyn Jesenovec, said, “ I think
it does affect us because the surveys we take asks us what like to do and it
gives us input on a specific occupation.” Allison Schlarmann, another
sophomore, said, “I do not think it is doing anything for us, because it does
not give us choices we are interested in after we are done taking the surveys.”
Mr. Casey
Bryant, Guidance Counselor and in charge of the curriculum at Western Dubuque
High School, has given his opinion on I Have a Plan Iowa. He has said, “It is
an outstanding program that has great sources, but the state did not provide a
special place in our curriculum for this. Therefore, the staff have a hard time
to schedule it in to their and the students daily schedule.” This curriculum
can be affective with students who actually like the careers that come up while
others do not get a career they want to do.
